Full Spinal Fusion help?

Tue Jul 29, 2008, 2:37 PM
Hey guys! ~deafeningdistraction is 18 and is just about to have Full Spinal Fusion. She asks:

I'm just about (in five months or so) to have a full spinal fusion, because I have two bends and they only fixed the first one. This time they're going to colapse one lung and go in through the side and the back. Anyone else had a full spinal fusion and can tell me what it's going to be like?

Anyone out there who has had this done and can offer this advice or support?

Thanks!

:peace:

How to Join

So how can you join this project? Simply watch the account, and introduce yourself, via userpage comment or note. Some things you might want to say when you introduce yourslelf is how long you've had scoliosis, if you've had surgery or not, whether or not you wear a brace, etc. etc. Once we friend you back, you're officially in the network. It's pretty simple!

What is scoliosis?

Simplest way to put it is that it's a curvature of the spine. Either it's rotated or it looks like an "C" or an "S" or other such oddities.

Why network?

A lot of people don't know about scoliosis. A good chance is that more people have it. When people find out, a lot of them are confused about what it is, and what they can do to help it. This is where you can come in; you can share experiences on how the surgery worked, how the back brace does, if doing certain activities will effect it or not... plus, us scoliosis people have to stick together! ;)

Heya I'm Izzy
I was 13 when I was diagnosed and am 15 now.
I was diagnosed in Summer 2007 when my dance teacher thought I was standing funny. I was braced in the September and have worn the brace up until now.

My parents have tried most things to try and fix it but now we just think it's past that.

I will be going into hospital to have my surgery on next Wednesday.

I'm so glad to have found this network and thank you for setting it up

Hey Mods!

I had a nifty idea, what if people sent you copies of their xrays and before/after photos if they wanted to?

I did a project like that her in NZ for a school thing, bt it never got much further than tne people.

About me: Had major back dramas, crappy doctors, the whole shebang and a full spinal fusion (rods n bolts) when i was 14, i'm now 21, still have a protruding hip, helping young kiids here in NZ bby giving advice and helping them not get too freaked out about the surgery.

Any questions, i'll do my best to answer them!

Hi my name is Linda, I'm 21 years of age and i was diagnosed with Scoliosis when I was about 13. My mother noticed that my ribs were poking out at the front on one side, I thought it was nothing til we went to the specialist. It was then that i found out that I had scoliosis. Did anyone else find it had to go to school with it on, scared that when i bumped into someone they'll think i was weird. and doing sports i had to hide in the little corner trying to pull the velcro off my back brace slowly so one no could hear. IT was such an embrassement. 3 years later of wearing that back brace, doctors found out it didnt help, has the brace helped anyone?!?!?!?! I have 2 serious curves in my back but doctors have said that I'm quiet unusual as my shoulders are parallel to the ground so you cant notice unless you really stare when i had a tight top on.

So now im 21 i have back aches every now and then but feel fine. So to all you people that are scared about having it or having an operation dont be scared and dont feel that your a werido.

Hey, I'm 18 and from the UK. I've had scoliosis since I was 11, and had the surgery when I was 16. I'm just about (in five months or so) to have a full spinal fusion, because I have two bends and they only fixed the first one. This time they're going to colapse one lung and go in through the side and the back. Anyone else had a full spinal fusion and can tell me what it's going to be like? x

I've put up a journal, so hopefully someone has had it done so they can tell you. Unfortunately, our club is fairly small at this point, but who knows, there may be someone. :)

Hello, I'm 19 and my story is pretty interesting. I went to the doctor one day for flu like symptoms and he's the one that diagnosed me and sent me to a specialist. So I've been seeing the specialist every year for check ups and x-rays to monitor it, and it's not bad enough for surgery, and actually just a few months ago when I went again, he said I didn't have to come back from 3-5 years because it was looking good. I sometimes have back aches but simple tylenol takes care of it. It doesn't really give me any big trouble. :)

I answer "both" because I fight for love.

Nathalie here, 22 years old, used to have a brace (which I had to wear for 23 hours every day, for 18 months) and had a surgery six years ago (because the brace didnt work for me). My curve also turned to the inside, so my heart and lung were under pressure.

Things are all good now, and I have two rods and 12 screws.

About a year ago, a student from a chiropractic academy in Texas had asked me to design a shirt for the Clear Institute! [link]

You can probably find a pic of the shirt in this club's fave's!

In!
I've had quite the hollow back my entire life, but they didn't find it necessary to take pictures until I was 12 or so. Then I had to go every six months, and ran in a test project with the David Back machines. Didn't have to wear a brace, since my worst curve is too low for it to have any effect. I have a S curve, 30°+ between the blades and 45°+ between the hips. I've not been bothered too much with it, I'm fairly flexible, only have pain when I have to stand for a long time, and this is why we're reluctant to get an operation, because it might worsen my situation.
Very sweet idea for a club, looking forward to meet more of you.
